FUMC of Memphis, TN Burns Down

Frequent commentor Keith Taylor e-mails to inform us of a terrible fire that destroyed the First United Methodist Church of Memphis, Tennessee. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, but in the meantime, area churches are joining in to support the church is this time of need. Because of that church's aggressive aid to the homeless, that population has been greatly impacted by the interruption in service.

The church held worship services again on Sunday under the supervision of Bishop Dick Wills.

I spent the better part of the day waiting to hear what church it was that burned (all the news channels were first saying is that it was one of the historic churches in Memphis).

It is unfortunate that the church building was lost but as the reports indicated the church is still intact through its outreach and its members. They will rebuild and the Glory of God will remain a central part of Memphis.

Let us also be thankful that there were no injuries. A major fire such as that one and no injuries to fire department personnel or civilians is always something to rejoice.

A sure fire tragedy that God can still use for good. For in all things He does this for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

May this tragedy bring more people to aid both them and those they help on a regular basis. And may God use this to reach out to someone somehow.
