A Liberal Responds to Pope Benedict XVI

Andrew Sullivan on the election of the new Pope:

It's not simply a continuation of John Paul II. It's a full-scale attack on the reformist wing of the church. The swiftness of the decision and the polarizing nature of this selection foretell a coming civil war within Catholicism. The space for dissidence, previously tiny, is now extinct. And the attack on individual political freedom is just beginning. [emphasis added]

Really, Mr. Sullivan? Is someone forcing you to stay in the Catholic Church?

Funny, I think he said the same thing about George W. Bush when he was elected.

By the way, it sounds like Andrew Sullivan is about as good a Catholic as he is a Conservative.

Yes. Why doesn't he just become an Episcopalian? The Catholic Church isn't going to change.

If the UMC were irrevocably heading in the wrong direction, I would jump ship. Why can't Sullivan?
