Florida Conference Staffer Arrested for Embezzlement

From The Ledger:

LAKELAND -- A former administrative assistant for the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church was arrested Thursday and charged with embezzling more than $700,000 from the group.

Virginia Albritton, 52, was charged with scheming to defraud and five counts of grand theft, according to an arrest warrant issued by the State Attorney's Office. She was held Thursday at the Polk County Jail on $250,000 bail.

Albritton worked in the conference's risk management department and handled insurance claims. Investigators found 117 checks worth $716,000 that were deposited to Albritton's checking account, arrest documents said, but the documents don't say exactly how much was taken from the conference.

One of the former pastors of my previous church was defrocked because there was no financial oversight at the church and the temptation proved too much for him to resist. Now the church maintains a financial transparency system that is almost paranoid in its checks and balances. It's a wise approach.

And the wise pastors want total transparency.

And the really wise ones not only want it, they insist on it--and make a stink when it doesn't happen.
