Weekend at Bernie's Court

Jesse Walker has an article addressing the history of very elderly U.S. Supreme Court Justices that is decidedly relevant to our astonishingly aged court. Watching the decline of Justice Rehnquist provoked a question: why on earth would anyone want to literally work himself into the grave in anything? Wouldn't any sensible person want to spend his last years or months in the company of family and friends?

There is something deeply morally and socially unhealthy about anyone so obsessed with work that he cannot put it down except for physical death.

What is it that inspires Supreme Court justices to remain on the bench long after it is time for retirement? Is it the power? Salary? Hot young law clerks?

Either way, I distrust anyone who cares more about work than family, and would prefer not to be ruled over by such a person.
