Jonah Goldberg on the conservative civil war over the Miers appointment:
Word is that former RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie made a brief visit to the Oval Office and accidentally drank some of the tap water. Shortly thereafter, he showed up at National Review in a tie-dyed muumuu, set fire to a very sensible bra, and chided editors for opposing such an admirable American womyn. Fortunately, I wasn't there, but I'm told he then pointed to the Xerox machine and shouted, "Look! Cows!" and collapsed to the floor. Like I said, the dementia is getting out of hand. (In other news, the Secret Service stopped George Will as he tried to barge into the White House, reportedly to explain the Constitutional Convention to the president with hand puppets.)

For all the good that Ms. Miers' appointment will do, President Bush may have accomplished more by appointing Hillary or Bill (oops .. forgot that he is no longer a licensed attorney!).
I am a supporter of the President even though he has caused me some raised eyebrows. This nomination, however, really makes me wonder what he's trying to accomplish. Did he settle for a woman? Did he deliberately choose a PERSON with no paper trail?
I still think that being a judge must be quite different from being a practicing attorney. Maybe I'm wrong, but an attorney stands on one side or the other. A judge has to be able to look at both sides equally. A judge cannot be predisposed to one side or the other.
Aside from my objection, however, I will say this: as the President's constitutional duty requires that he fill the vacancy, Ms. Miers should get an up or down vote. I'm just afraid of what will become of the mid-term elections.
I thought that it was Hillary who had lost her law license (she forgot to renew it in time and would have to take the bar exam again) but not Bill.
I wouldn't be suprised if Bush chose someone based on a lack of a paper trail. It could be a clever strategery, but also generally entails hiring someone completely unqualified.
That's what bothers me most. I wrote my own thoughts about this appointment on my blog that a judge, any judge, cannot be loyal to the president, the Congress, or even the people. A judge must first be loyal to the rule of law. And I am afraid that this appointment may very well be a blatant attempt to "stack" the Court.
I was not aware that Hillary lost her license, but Bill gave his up as part of a court settlement and a fine for perjury in the Paula Jones deal.
