Art Blogging: What is Meaningful to You?

In the past few days, I've shared with you the art that has touched and grown me.

The fine arts are the summit of human achievement. Conceptually, to create what is beautiful, shocking, or otherwise moving is the highest aspiration for a person. We may struggle with technology or agriculture and accomplish great things in those fields, but art is what we are striving for. Art is formative -- a sort of narrative for the eyes -- that takes us on a journey into other worlds, or our own.

What art has been meaningful to your life? What works or artists give you pause -- or even take your breath away?

It's not art in the physical sense, created with paint and canvas, but the art that is achieved through film has moved me tremendously. The art of storytelling has a way of tapping into what is truly human about all of us, tugging at the strings of hope and fear and love and anger that we all carry with us in one form or another as we strive for what is good and right and true in a world that often times is not. There are many painters that have struck me with their messages in oil and I appreciate them greatly for that. But there's just something about a well-told story that can take me away to that other place where I can wonder and discover parts of myself that I had yet to see.

Thanks for your art blogging.

I have to admit, I'm generally not a big lover of the visual arts. So I appreciate when someone else makes me pay attention to it a little bit. Generally, theatre is my favorite type of art. Good theatre. And good dance, especially ballet. I did see some fantastic works of art - sculptures - at the museum of the american indian in DC, by Allan Houser. I found them pretty moving.

I have to say that Native American art particularly stirs me as well. There is a story there that is a little closer to home. I wonder, though, if art can reflect a certain sense of reality.

Isn't it amazing how many of the truly great artists of the West were French? I wonder what it is about that nation that was able to consistently produce the highest caliber of artists.
