Charles Francois Jalabert (1819-1901) was a French Academic Classicist. He studied at the Ecole des Dessin of Nimes and then at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris under
Paul Delaroche. He won second place in the Prix de Rome in 1841, but never achieved the fame and recognition of the first-tier artists of his generation.
This picture is
Nymphs Listening to the Song of Orpheus (1853), which is in a private collection. In Greek mythology,
Orpheus was said to be the greatest musician and poet. I like this painting because of its smooth, hazy, dreamy atmosphere, similar to the works of
Boucher.
