Question of the Day

Does Data, as a man-made being, have Original Sin?

Data is my hero. Like him I was once lost inside a purely rational mind void of any emotion. His simple struggle to become more human-like was courageous, bold, and inspirational. He possessed a child-like innocense and curiosity yet contained the raw power for great destruction. Unlike his evil brother he seemed incapable of harboring ill intent. Would the emotion chip bring with it wild, selfish desire and illusions of grandiosity? Stay tuned for the next episode. :)

I should imagine that his positronic net would be able to come up with sins that no one else has thought of. If anyone could come up with an original sin, it is surely Data! :)

Ok - Have you ever posted a nerdier post?

...I can't believe I got out my apologetics bluebook to comment on this post!...

Data cannot have original sin because he was not created by God to have a relationship with Him to then reject that relationship. (right? hmmm.) He is, however, inherently flawed, because he was created by faulty image-bearers...

but then again, Data can't really exist as we know him, it's impossible - because there is no neutral ground (Van Til-Amsterdam debate.) yep, that's my guess. Edgar would be proud.

Hey, it's on the graduation exam of Starfleet Academy's School of Theology.

Okay, I vote NO, Data cannot have original sin. But he does have the capacity for "soms" which stands for "Sub Optimum Moral Selection", which has, with or without the emotion chip, a connotation relative to the population he has been committed to. For instance, anything he may do that violates the prime directive would be considered a "soms" error. Did he sin in doing that? Not in my book.
