Question of the Day

In order to be a successful theologian, how important is it to have a good beard?

My theology teacher at school this past year had a beard!

Mine tend to as well. I think that it gives you a +1 Wisdom modifier.

Can one not appear to be wise without having a beard? Are we assuming that theologians must be male?

That might explain the paucity of big name female theologians.

Of course, Emily, don't assume that one cannot be female and have a beard. Why, in West Virginia....

i think the main point of the beard is to say, "I'm among those human beings who doing do physical labor. I think and talk for a living."

sorry, I meant "who don't do"

That was the subject around here when photos of this year's U.K.
Methodist President of Conference appeared in the press, because we have a bearded Minister and a bearded Circuit Superintendent Minister. The usual explanation is that people think that a beard makes you look older and wiser and more distinguished.

The odd thing is that elsewhere on the head extra hair has the reverse effect! My young gardener who complained 'I'm too young to be bald!' recently had an expensive head of hair fitted and the result is that now I often mistake him for one of his very much younger apprentices.

Hauerwas, JH Yoder, and McLaren... is the other fellow in that same "post-liberal," non-violent camp?

John said...

Yes, he is.

Methinks that Jonathon is just aping the fashions of his favorite theologians.

It's a sentiment that I can't share. I mean, I like Brian Russell, but I'm not going to get my nipples pierced.

that's funny..

is there extra bonuses for baldness, white hair, glasses for theo-cred? or are those balancing agents for the beardless?

Beards can be overrated., however I think my blog would get many more visits if everyone thought I was middle aged, balding, with a white beard and glasses. Throw in a cool hat. Would you feel more comfortable at my blog if you thought I look like this?

According to most of the icons I've ever seen (no doubt, historically acurate depictions) Jesus had a beard. St. Paul had a beard. All the major theologians of the early church had beards. For this reason, I grew a beard when I got to seminary.
