Controlling Church Keys

There have been many interesting comments in the two threads about church key access. It can be uncomfortable to take a key back from a long-time member, but if key ownership is being abused, it is necessary.

But it could be worse. It could be a parsonage key.

I've heard stories...

If our hearts, our minds and our doors are always open, then why do we need keys?

Sounds like a Steven Wright bit... If Denny's/7-11 is open 24 hours, why are there locks on the doors?

Today our Church was broken into, the door was smashed, and the office was broken into. The office desk was smashed and papers were strewn across the room. The key holder and keys was stolen and the filing cabinet was forcibly opened. This is very shocking to our Church community, considering that the Church is in a small Connecticut town of 2,000 people with 1 gas station, 1 street light, and 1 store.

In a past appointment, after we left my dad found out that someone from the church would go into the parsonage when she knew we would be out of town for the day to check up on how we lived and how my mom kept the house - while working, herself, and raising toddlers! While the parsonage belongs to the church, it's still the pastor and family's home, at least they try to make it feel like home.
