Question of the Day

Surely you're not going to wear that to church, are you?

Every man and woman reading this blog knows that question ... but from different perspectives.

"No, dear, I thought I'd just get it out of the closet and air it out a bit."

What was bad was when I got it TWICE: once from my wife, and then from my (then) 10 year old daughter. I figured I'd better change.

What's better; I already did wear that to church.

But I'm moving in a month, so I don't care.

A story from a friend of mine, from the days before I started attending our church...

When Shawn and I were new to Jeff Street and the church still met at the Center, the basement had rooms that were used by Seven Counties to house some of their clients with mental illness.

Many a prayer time was interrupted by one of them turning out the lights while we tried to meet or coming out to express a prayer concern that only God understood but Cindy tried to pray for, and even one week a man came out naked and asked if anyone had a light.

I remember saying to Shawn that I wasn’t sure that we were "spiritual enough" to hang with this group. After all, none of them got tickled (while he and I were about to snort!) or even lost their place, or acted as if there were one thing unusual about the odd turn of events unfolding.

This is Jeff Street at its best – you can show up naked and no one bats an eye. Wear a suit and every head in the room turns.

Dan, because of stories like this one, the ones on your blog, and the pictures of Jeff Street that you post, I am very interested in visiting if I'm ever in your area. And for more than just a drive-by encounter.

Did you want to wear it, instead?

We are the church, so when can I wear this?

Well, in that vein, I could mention the sermon that our pastor did once on the Sermon on the Mount where it talks about if they take your cloak, give them your shirt also (or whatever the language is), where our pastor's husband provided an object lesson by acting out the story - down to his boxers - much to the shock of everyone!

So, it's not just the mentally ill providing unexpected moments, unfortunately...

We'd love for you to stop by anytime you're in the area.

Along those lines, we'll be publishing a book of Jeff St stories and essays, etc this summer (which is where the above story came from)

Just so you know, though, don't come expecting a striptease or anything - that's the exception, not the rule.

I've always wanted to do a worship drama where David dances naked before the Ark of the Covenant.

Couldn't find anyone to take me up on it though.
