Question of the Day

Since 1941, the editors of Gourmet magazine have annually announced their favorite cookie. Click through the slideshow for these tempting delights.

When I feel like pampering myself, I get a box of generic devil's food cookies and a 2-liter jug of cola. I've loved these things since I was a little boy and my grandfather always had them at home. No one in the family can remember why, but he was known as "Ci-Ci" among his grandchildren. Consequently, I always called these "Ci-Ci Cookies". Ci-Ci simply excelled at being a grandfather, and I still miss him even though he has been gone 15 years now. Whenever I eat devil's food cookies, I think of him.

I am particularly fond of ginger snaps. They have a propensity to surprise ( even within the same bag/batch, their consistency ranges from the chewy/firm to the crunchy/brittle ) and the just-right balance of sugary/spicy (with a hint of salty/savory) means I have to limit myself to only occasionally enjoying them.

For general cookie snacks I prefer Oreo's, plain Oreo's. No double stuffing, no altered colors, no non-traditional flavors or shapes. 6 of them arranged in a triangular pattern (they look like the shape of a famous rodent's noggin) with milk. I prefer that they not be cracked or broken because they will drop to the bottom of the glass. Not that I'm picky or anything.

For a real treat, my wife makes some awesome chocolate chip cookies.

Oreos. At one point, back when I weighed over 3 bills, I used to crumble them in a bowl, pour milk over them, and eat them like cereal.

No wonder I became diabetic.

My least favorite to make, but most favorite to eat is called a brownie mound. It's basically a dark, fudgy, rich, slightly chewy cookie with pecans.
And of course, there's a story. This was one of my grandmother's "special" recipes. Not long after her death, we realized that we had misplaced it, and for several years, went without them at Christmas. We really thought they were lost forever, because Grandmother claimed that they were her own special recipe.
One year, I was trolling through the Southern Living cookbook and lo and behold, there was the recipe. Christmases were saved, and once a year I make these cookies. If I made them more often, I'd need to go to rehab--they're addictive.

RevAnne, I didn't realize I was privileged to receive a time-honored family tradition recipe when you sent me those cookies! coolness!

My favorites... probably chocolate chip right out of the oven, or sugar cookies covered in large amounts of powdered sugar icing.

Great, now I'm hungry.

I make andes candies cookies, but only at Christmas. Yummmmmm.

RevAnne's brownie mounds sound like my grandmother's Bermuda squares -- extremely rich brownies with pecans and a brown sugar glaze on top. Carb-counters, beware.

My favorites are quite boring: chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin, from either McDonald's, Subway, or the regional Sheetz convenience store chain. Three cookies and a large black coffee, and I'm happy and energized for a few hours more.

To eat? Thin mints, grasshoppers, or those mint Oreos.

To make? I usually stick to simple toll house chocolate chip cookies.

Tollhouse cookies. And you can't get Nestles chocolate chips over here, so I have to import them!
