Gun Readiness vs. Gun Security
James Rummel is a professional armed self-defense instructor. I e-mailed him a question about keeping a gun safe from children at home, but still quickly accessible during an emergency. He kindly wrote a lengthy response. Thanks, James!

I think the guy at sevesteen is about right. Cable locks suck. Dedicated gun safes are overpriced. Middle options are the way to go. I'll probably write my opinion at length over at my place.
Oh and my brother bought a winchester 92 trapper in .44 mag. I got to shoot it last weekend. Nice gun. Fun to shoot with .44 special, but a real shoulder breaker with .44 mag. If I were to spend my money it would probably be on a similar 20" gun in .357.
Thanks for the input. V and I were looking at handguns last week for both protection and to earn our "True Texan" moniker.
Did you know, for the fashion minded female, there are pink handguns?
Anyway, the nice thing about living where I do is that there are ranges close by that allow for the rental of a handgun of your choice so you can shoot them and get a feel for what you would be comfortable with before buying. It is a pretty sweet deal! Taking a gun for a test drive.

"Did you know, for the fashion minded female, there are pink handguns?"Did you know, for the pimp who has everything, there are there are tiger striped Magnums?

James,
At least the gun manufacturers are up to date on all trends as to be able to fill every niche market possible. If I was a pimp, and I had a tendency to shoot people, I probably wouldn't buy such a distinctive gun. There may be those pimps, new to the racket, that think that sort of thing would set the out in the crowd, and they would be right for all the wrong reasons.

Did you know, for the fashion minded female, there are pink handguns?Of course there are. Smith and Wesson even makes a series of pistols designed for women called "ladysmiths".
There is also an entire shooting organization called Pink Pistols. It's a self-defense advocacy group that teaches shooting skills to homosexuals. Seems the gays don't like getting bashed very much.
Thanks for all the info guys. I appreciate the knowledge gained.

Yeah, but they don't get around to shooting very often.
I volunteered my services to the Central Ohio chapter when they formed some years ago. I was only involved in one training class, with a total of five students in the class.
This doesn't mean that I gave up on them, more the reverse. Instead of an advocacy group devoted to promoting armed self defense in the GLBT community, the members were pretty much only interested in meeting every month for dinner and gossip.
Nothing wrong with spending the occasional evening with some buddies, but the reason I was there was to help people at risk. When it became obvious that they weren't about to actually exert themselves to recruit memebers, I drifted away.
Still have the membership card around somewhere, though.
