John Hodgman at the Radio and TV Correspondents' Dinner

[YouTube Link] It's like the White House Correspondents' Dinner, only less prestigious. President Obama was in attendance, and John Hodgman's address was largely concerned with his role as the "first nerd president". I prefer the term "geek". That word originates from carnival sideshow performers who used to bite off the heads of chickens, and so somehow seems more appropriate, at least for myself. But regardless, Obama then goes on to fail Hodgman's tests of true geek status.

His praise for Obama is a bit over-the-top at times -- well, maybe just for me, since I didn't vote for him -- but the speech is still quite funny.

I just wanna know if you could answer the three simple questions? I couldn't, but I did find myself calling out "Mohadib!"

Well, of course. The answers are Shai-Hulud, a thumper, and the Water of Life.

Oh, and Crom was the god of the Cimmerians.

But aren't nerds and geeks 2 different kinds of people?

"But aren't nerds and geeks 2 different kinds of people?"

I would have to say yes to this one. Sometimes, there is a blending of the 2, in John's case. Then, the affectionate term my wife uses for me: dork. Probably due to my love of good sci-fi and fascination with motorcycles and pipeline operations.

Brilliant and funny.

I loved it when five people in the audience got his first Dune reference.

I think Obama is more jock than nerd, though. He's learned to speak nerd as part of his political skills.

Nerd-dom requires substantial math skills. Geekery does not.

So what I am reading here is that you are claiming the lack of math skills needed to perfom simple operations, such as, making a paper airplane, but you alien language skills are highly evolved?

I only speak enough Klingon in order to get into a barfight.

By "advanced math skills", I am not referring to your personal definition, but something more like trig functions without consulting a textbook.

I thought a good Nerd needed those skills to make the ultimate paper airplane.
