James Hawkins of Joystick Division has a list of the scariest video games ever made. The scariest one that I've ever played is not on the list, but I'll mention it anyway: Manhunt. You play James Earl Cash, a death-row inmate kidnapped from his own execution and forced to play the starring role in a snuff film. "Gritty" doesn't even come close to describing it. The sequel, which I've never played, was actually banned in Britain.

I agree. I only played the first level of Manhunt because it freaked me out.
