Writer of Battlefield Earth Apologizes for Movie

The movie Battlefield Earth, based on the novel by science fiction writer/cult leader L. Ron Hubbard, received the Razzie for "Worst Movie of the Decade". J.D. Shapiro, author of the screenplay, has published a formal apology in The New York Post:
Let me start by apologizing to anyone who went to see "Battlefield Earth."

It wasn't as I intended -- promise. No one sets out to make a train wreck. Actually, comparing it to a train wreck isn't really fair to train wrecks, because people actually want to watch those.
I've never seen the movie, but I did read about half of the book about ten years ago. I had heard that it was a bad movie -- but "worst movie of the decade"? Now I've got to see it. Anyone can make a bad movie. But it takes special genius to make a movie so terrible that it takes people's breath away.

What, in your opinion, is the one movie that is so bad that it's worth seeing?

Why, Flash Gordon, of course.

Can't argue with Johnny Cat there.

Battlefield Earth is not worth seeing. It is just bad.

One of my favorite movies of all time is The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. People tell me it is bad. I can't see why they say that, though.

Star Wars Christmas Special? But it is not so bad it's good. It's significantly worse than that.

I love Flash Gordon and own the DVD.

"Drop Dead Fred" is really bad. But after a while, you start to be impressed by Phoebe Cates's unbending refusal to act.

There's one scene where she goes through a door and finds herself in a room where the usual laws of perspective don't apply. She says "I'm afraid," and exits the room. You just know that this was Take 43, and the tearful director finally gave up on getting Phoebe to act afraid and choked out, "Just tell the audience that you're afraid and we'll move on to Scene 112."

That's three votes for Flash Gordon. I'll go see it. And I'll take a gander at Drop Dead Fred.
