Well, it explains why the Keanes were educated at Miskatonic University.
I like to think of family circus as a subtle parody of Lovecraft. Otherwise its popularity makes no sense whatsoever.
I still think Nietzsche Family Circus is funnier though.
But I have a feeling you are on board with me on that.
