Question of the Day

How often should the Potluck be served at churches?

Weekly if possible. My congregation has vegetarian cooking down to a T, and I personally hate cooking. So I am a strong advocate of potluck.

This is a Methodist blog, right?

Does such a question even need to be asked?

At least weekly! I like food, and I /love/ minimizing the cooking and cleaning :D

We have a meal after every one of our four services. Needless to say, I've gained weight in the few years I've been on staff.

"As United Methodists, we have inherited many theological distinctives from our spiritual forebears, including the doctrine of sanctifying grace, assurance of the Holy Spirit, and the sharing of the Sacred Potluck Dinner. It is a well-known fact that John Wesley carried his Bible, hymnbook and Rules in one saddlebag, and a macaroni casserole in the other. Therefore, to fulfill this most holy obligation, we recommend all local congregations of the United Methodist Church hold the Sacred Potluck Supper at least once a month, preferably even more. Furthermore, we urge that the Sacred Potluck Supper be open to persons of all ages, ethnicities, religions and orientations, and should include a wide variety of foods, including sugar-free dishes for diabetics, organic foods for hippies and vegetable plates for vegetarians. Let's eat." (Book of Discipline, ¶ 777777.Z(1).
