What sort of financial training should seminarians have?

I'm at the Clergy Benefits Academy sponsored by the General Board of Pensions and Health Benefits and this exact question came up.

Personal budgeting was one of the strongest answers...

Interesting question, John. My husband has often said that when he retires from practicing law he would like to teach a required class at seminary to teach aspiring pastors how to run a small business (which most churches are).

He would cover how to read and understand financial statements, how to choose auditors, how to create realistic budgets and project costs and cash flow.
