The Libertarianism of Firefly

In our recent discussion of the political tendencies of Star Wars and Star Trek, Cybrludite suggested that the short-lived science fiction franchise Firefly is libertarian.

I've seen all fourteen episodes of the show (but not the concluding movie), so this proposition intrigued me.

The main characters are not state actors (e.g. Star Trek, Babylon 5) nor are they trying to become state actors (e.g. Star Wars, Exosquad). They are freebooters who have a generally non-aggressive attitude toward those around them, but complete disregard for the rule of law. They are, at times, openly thieves. Government is never presented in a positive light, but generally as a totalitarian force that seeks power for its own sake, and uses it arbitrarily.

So yes, I can see how Firefly comes across as libertarian.

For other views, consult this column by Reason's Julian Sanchez about the specifically existentialist libertarianism of the series. Tyler Cowen sees the series as Burkean. And Gardner Goldsmith gave a lecture on the subject at a Borders book store.

Star Wars with a Laugh Track

(YouTube Link)

Usually, I find laugh tracks to be detrimental to a comedy, but I guess that they can improve a drama. This video of the scene from The Empire Strikes Back in which Luke and Vader fight has a laugh track timed to the action and dialogue. It's surprisingly funny, especially when Luke's hand gets cut off.

Growing Up Heroes

Growing Up Heroes is a photoblog by Franz Donovan. It's an attempt to explore how comicbook heroes impacted the way that we grew up. Readers can submit photos of themselves pretending to be superheroes as kids.

When I was about six, my mom sewed a piece of velcro onto an old towel. It became a quite functional cape, which I used to variously play Batman or Super John (my own heroic persona).

How about you? Did you pretend to be a superhero when you were a kid? Who was your favorite?

After 16 Years, The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Is Going Off the Air

I was in high school when it first came out, and I watched the first episode. It was so bad that I boldly predicted that it would be canceled by the end of the week. I was spectacularly wrong.

It lasted for 700 episodes over 17 seasons. That's quite a run.

Did you know that one of the actors who played the Green Ranger is now on death row in California?

Man Brings Fembot Home at Christmas to Meet His Parents

xmasfembot

Christmas is all about awkward moments at family gatherings. Le Trung, inventor of the robotic woman substitute Aiko, took that principle to a whole new level when he decided that he should celebrate Christmas with both his parents and his fembot:

The science genius enjoyed a festive dinner with his mum, dad and his £30,000 fembot which he designed and built by hand.

Le, 34, from Brampton, Ontario, Canada, even bought gifts for his dream girl, who is so lifelike she speaks fluent English and Japanese, helped cook the turkey and hang up decorations.

'Aiko is like any woman, she enjoys getting new clothes,' he said.

'I loved buying them for her too.'

This scenario has got to be harder than the proverbial "Mom, I'm gay, and this is my boyfriend."

'Twas the Night Before Trekmas

Here's a Star Trek version of Clement Clarke Moore or Henry Livingston's classic poem "The Night Before Christmas". The first three stanzas:

'Twas the night before Christmas on the Enterprise-D,
On a routine short hop to Starbase 03,
With Data on duty in the command chair,
At Warp 6, the Enterprise soon would be there.

Just for something to do while the other crew slept,
He scanned where historical records were kept --
And with a blink of his eye and a cock of his head,
"Intriguing! Tomorrow is Christmas!" he said.

But no one was stirring, and he sought to find why,
And so he buzzed Geordi, who awoke with a sigh:
"Christmas? It's only an old holiday --
Now just let me get back to sleep, okay?"

Star Trek vs. Star Wars; Liberal vs. Conservative

John Hood expresses the view that Star Trek is a liberal franchise and Star Wars is a conservative franchise:

• In Star Trek, law enforcement is armed with phasers. Officers stun people, then lock them up, then subject them to intensive psychiatry until they are “cured” of their criminal impulses. In Star Wars, law enforcement under the Galactic Republic appears to be the job of Jedi Knights who try to avoid violence but, if pressed, will cut you in half with a light saber.

• In Star Trek, evil characters are frequently considered to be the product of a poor environment, a bad childhood, misunderstanding, or miscommunication. It turns out that Captain Kirk and the other original cast members just didn’t understand the Klingons, for example, or the Romulans. The Gorn, a lizard-like race that does a Pearl Harbor on the Federation and kills many innocent people, are later excused from culpability because they say that they saw peaceful Federation colonists as “invaders” in their territory. Killer clouds of space gas or giant space amebas threatening the lives of billions turn out to be lost children or mindless things just trying to survive. Even the Borg, a great source of villainy from The Next Generation, are humanized in subsequent stories.

In Star Wars, evil characters have been seduced by the dark side of the Force. They have given into temptation, and are held accountable for their actions. The Star Wars movies are really morality tales, and have a strong religious component in spite of themselves. No one argues that Sith Lords might have turned out differently if they had just been enrolled in a quality preschool program.

Do you agree? Why or why not?

UPDATE: James Rummel offers his own answer to the question. Thanks for the link, James!

George Lucas Loses Exclusive Copyright to Stormtroopers

stormtrooper

A British court case between Lucasfilm and an artist who made 50 Stormtrooper helmets and sold them ended with the court declaring that Lucasfilm did not have an exclusive claim to the iconic image:

Mr Justice Mann ruled that the models were not sculptures and so did not have copyright protection, which would extend 70 years beyond the death of their creator. Instead he ruled that the models were industrial designs, which could be protected for only 15 years.

Yesterday Lord Justices Rix, Jacob and Patten agreed, dismissing Lucasfilm’s appeal. They said that the helmet and armour had a “utilitarian” rather than artistic purpose. They also ruled that Lucasfilm could not enforce its US copyright in Britain, but agreed that Mr Ainsworth did not own the copyright. He has a bill of more than £2.5million, although he will seek to recover many of his costs from Lucasfilm.

Dungeons & Dragons for Microsoft Surface is Mind-Blowingly Awesome

I'm not sure how to describe Microsoft Surface, but here's my attempt: it's a multi-user touch-sensitive computer tool that is interactive in so many ways. And students at Carnegie-Mellon University have developed a prototype Dungeons & Dragons program that works with it.

The advantages of computer gaming are immediate calculation and excellent graphics. The advantage of old-fashioned tabletop gaming is complete flexibility of storyline. This program appears to synthesize the two in an amazing way.

The Batman: The Animated Series Writers' Bible

A writers' bible is a reference guide given to writers for a series, describing the worldbuilding, characters, emphases, and limitations that the producers desire to see expressed in scripts. At the link, you'll see the writers' bible for Batman: The Animated Series -- the excellent 90s cartoon that formed the first pillar of the DC Animated Universe. If you're a fan of the series, it makes for fascinating reading. Here's a sample.

Our version of Batman will rely less on gadgets and more on his own deductive powers and fighting skills. Staying true to The Batman's original conception as "the world's greatest detective," we want to stress his mental abilities, whether he be assembling clues in a case or using his vast scientific knowledge in the Bat cave's laboratory. He is a crime-fighter who is skilled in many languages and is also a consummate master of disguise.

10 Best/Worst Villains in Buffy: The Vampire Slayer

I largely agree with Nerd Bastards' list, especially Dark Willow and The Gentlemen. When Willow's lover Tara was murdered and Willow let the dark magic consume her so that she could wreak vengeance, she turned deliciously wicked.

And the episode "Hush" featuring The Gentlemen -- graceful, polite and completely silent demons was amazing. I suspect that the actors were professional dancers, given the way that they moved. No episode of the series was as frightening as this one.

Well, That Didn't Work

So I decided to make a few changes on my blog, like a new header. Which worked perfectly. Then I decided to get rid of Adsense. Blogger Help told me how to do so -- look up a certain section of code, delete, and republish.

Ah, in my younger days, I was more careful. Before making any changes, I would copy the entire coding into a Word document, save it, and then preview changes in my template before saving them.

I followed Google's instructions precisely, and now my sidebar is way over there. I can't figure out why.

William Shatner's Raw Nerve

(Video Link)

William Shatner's Raw Nerve is an interview show on the Biography Channel. It reveals something about Shatner that I never would have guessed: he is a fantastic interviewer. He is quite skilled at drawing out a guest and perceiving the emotional motivations that drive a person's life. It must be an especially difficult task for a flamboyant actor to remain on screen but put someone else at the center of attention, but Shatner performs this task admirably. Above, you can see these characteristics in his interview with Rush Limbaugh.

I'd also note that although he's known as a hackneyed actor, Shatner really demonstrated his acting chops in Boston Legal as the semi-senile (but fully aroused) lawyer Denny Crane.

Hat tip to someone for the video, but I can't remember whom at the moment.
